Terms of Service
Version 2026-07 · Effective August 3, 2026
The short version
Between Kin helps your family have the conversation you've been meaning to have — about how a parent wants to age, and what everyone's assuming. These terms are the agreement that makes that possible, and we've tried to write them the way we write everything: plainly, and without traps.
The essentials: you have to be an adult to use Between Kin. Your family's answers belong to your family, not to us. We're a conversation tool — not lawyers, doctors, financial advisers, or therapists — and the reports we generate are starting points for your family's judgment, never a substitute for it. Every decision your family makes — about money, care, housing, legal arrangements, anything — is your family's alone, and you agree we're not responsible for those decisions or their outcomes. The subscription is annual, and your plan stays yours until the period you paid for ends. We'll never change these terms quietly — if something material changes, you'll be notified.
If anything here is unclear, write to legal@betweenkin.com. A human reads it.
Who we are
Between Kin is operated by 9571-9035 Québec Inc., a company based in Montréal, Québec, Canada. These terms are an agreement between Between Kin and you, and they apply to betweenkin.com and the Between Kin service.
By creating an account, or by agreeing at the start of your questionnaire as an invited participant, you accept these terms.
What Between Kin is — and what it isn't
Between Kin is a tool that helps families surface and compare their private perspectives about an aging parent's future — living arrangements, care, finances, family roles — and turn what they learn into an ongoing plan.
What it isn't matters just as much:
We are not legal, financial, medical, or mental-health professionals, and nothing in the product — questionnaires, reports, milestones, suggestions — is legal, financial, medical, or psychological advice. When your family's plan touches wills, powers of attorney, care decisions, or money, bring in the appropriate professional.
The reports are mirrors, not verdicts. A gap report shows where family members answered differently. Differences are normal — the report is not a diagnosis of your family, a measure of dysfunction, or a prediction. It's a starting point for a conversation only your family can have.
The roadmap is a guide, not a prescription. Milestones are suggestions drawn from common family situations. Your family decides what applies, what to rename, and what to ignore.
Who can use Between Kin
Between Kin is for adults. You must be at least 18 years old to create an account or participate in a plan — no exceptions, including for mature teenagers involved in family caregiving. Every participant agrees to these terms personally before beginning their questionnaire.
If you're the organizer, you agree to invite only people who belong in the plan: adult members of your family (or chosen family) who you reasonably believe would want to be part of this conversation. Don't invite strangers, don't invite anyone under 18, and don't add someone's email to surprise or pressure them.
Your account
The organizer is the account holder: responsible for the subscription, for keeping their login email current, and for the invitations they send. Login is by secure link to your email, so protecting access to your email inbox protects your Between Kin account.
Invited participants don't have accounts or passwords — they access the plan through their personal invitation link. That link is theirs alone; sharing it is like sharing a key.
Your family's data
Your family's information belongs to your family — we don't claim ownership of any of it. Your answers, reflections, reports, and roadmap are yours. You grant us only the limited permission we need to operate the service: to store your information, process it into your reports and roadmap, and display it to the people the product's privacy rules allow.
How we collect, protect, and delete personal information is governed by our Privacy Policy, which is part of these terms. Its core promises — private answers stay private, we don't sell data, ever — apply with the same force as anything written here.
Payments and subscriptions
Billing. Between Kin is an annual subscription, billed in US dollars through Stripe, our payment processor. Current pricing is displayed on our site at purchase. Founding-member pricing, where offered, is honored for as long as your subscription remains continuously active, as described at signup.
Renewal. Subscriptions renew annually. We'll send a reminder before renewal, and you can cancel before the renewal date to avoid the next charge.
Cancellation. Cancellation stops future billing; your family keeps full access until the end of the period you've already paid for. After that, your data enters the retention window described in the Privacy Policy (90 days), so a lapse doesn't erase your family's plan.
Refunds. Payments are non-refundable, except where the law of your place of residence gives you a right to one — in which case that right applies and we'll honor it. If something has gone genuinely wrong, please write to us anyway; we're a small company and want to ensure you have the best possible experience with the service.
Non-payment. If a renewal payment fails, we'll notify you and retry. If payment can't be completed, the subscription ends and the normal end-of-subscription process applies.
Acceptable use
Between Kin is for personal, family use. That means:
No commercial use or resale. Don't use Between Kin to deliver services to clients, resell access, or build a competing product. (If you're a professional — a financial adviser, mediator, or care coordinator — who'd like to use Between Kin with the families you serve, we'd genuinely like to talk: hello@betweenkin.com. But that's a partnership conversation, not something these terms permit on their own.)
No harm within the family. Don't use Between Kin to harass, deceive, manipulate, or exert pressure on family members. Don't answer a questionnaire on someone else's behalf, impersonate a participant, or use invitation links that aren't yours.
No abuse of the platform. Don't attempt to break, probe, or overload the service, scrape data, or interfere with other families' plans.
We may suspend or close accounts that violate these rules or abuse the service. If we ever have to, we'll tell you why, and suspension doesn't erase your family's data rights under the Privacy Policy.
Availability — provided "as is"
We work hard to keep Between Kin reliable, and we monitor it around the clock. But we're a small company and the internet is the internet: the service is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose. We can't guarantee uninterrupted availability, that every feature will work perfectly, or that the service will meet every family's needs. What we can promise is that when something breaks, fixing it is our first priority.
Your decisions are yours
This section matters, so we're saying it as plainly as we can.
Between Kin gives your family information about itself — where your perspectives align and where they differ. What your family does with that information is entirely up to your family. By using Between Kin, you acknowledge and agree that:
You make your own decisions. Any decision made during or after using Between Kin — about finances, property, inheritance, care arrangements, housing, medical matters, legal documents, family roles, or anything else — is made by you and your family alone, in your sole judgment.
You're not relying on us. Between Kin's questionnaires, reports, milestones, and suggestions are informational tools, not advice, and you agree you are not relying on them as legal, financial, medical, tax, or psychological advice. For decisions with legal, financial, or medical consequences, you agree that consulting a qualified professional is your responsibility.
We're not accountable for outcomes. To the maximum extent permitted by law, you agree that Between Kin is not responsible or liable for the decisions your family makes, the conversations you have, actions taken or not taken based on the product, or their consequences — financial, legal, medical, relational, or otherwise — and you release Between Kin from any claims arising from them.
None of this is us dodging our real obligations: we remain responsible for operating the service as these terms and our Privacy Policy describe. It's a clear line between our job — better information — and yours: your family's choices.
Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Between Kin's total liability for any claims arising from these terms or your use of the service is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the event giving rise to the claim. We are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, punitive, or consequential damages of any kind — and, as "Your decisions are yours" makes explicit, we are not liable for the outcomes of your family's decisions and conversations. We give your family better information; what your family does with it is yours.
Nothing in this section limits liability that cannot be limited under applicable law, and nothing in these terms reduces consumer protections you're entitled to under the laws where you live.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Québec and the applicable laws of Canada. If you're using Between Kin as a consumer, this doesn't take away protections that the consumer-protection laws of your own jurisdiction grant you regardless of contract terms — including, for Québec residents, the Consumer Protection Act.
Before either of us takes any dispute further, we ask for the chance to resolve it directly — write to legal@betweenkin.com. Most problems are misunderstandings, and we'd rather fix than fight.
Ending your subscription
We can end or suspend service for violations of these terms as described in Acceptable use. If we ever discontinue Between Kin entirely, we'll give organizers reasonable advance notice and a way to export their family's data first.
Changes to these terms
If we make material changes to these terms, we'll notify you and the version and effective date at the top of this page will change.
Minor changes that don't affect your rights (fixing a typo, clarifying wording) may be made without re-agreement, with the changelog available on request.
